Movie Conventions Research: Spiderman
Movie: Spiderman
Camera Movements and Angles
There are often close-ups of facial expressions and tracking shots to show characters moving throughout the scene. Establishing shots are combined with pans to emphasize said movement throughout the scene. Zooms in to show important objects getting closer, which creates anticipation. Medium shots and medium close-ups put focus on the characters whenever needed and extreme close-ups used to show dramatic facial expressions.
Mis-En-Scene
Costumes
Characters are either high schoolers, scientists, or military officials and dressed accordingly. Respectively, casual clothes, button-downs, lab coats, and green suits with various medallions.
Lighting
Realistic and matches the scene. When the characters are outside, the sun is shown and the characters are lit by it.
Acting
Most characters in this movie act harshly towards the nerdy protagonist. When Parker gets sick, he acts faint and his eyes are wild, he eventually falls asleep. When one of the characters takes a drug that has the side effect of insanity and rage, he acts accordingly, yelling and shaking his coworker. In the next scene, it is revealed his coworker was murdered, most likely due to his actions.
Make-Up
Makeup isn't used much throughout this movie to enhance the plot, it's just for the characters' sake.
Props
For the high school characters, props like bookbags, pencils, cameras, and lunch trays are used. For the scientists, glass bottles, computers, and sci-fi technology are common throughout the film.
Settings
The settings vary from the homes of the characters to schools, to the high-tech science lab.
SOUND
Nondiegetic sound is used through voiceover/narration, while diegetic sound matches scene by scene(if glass shatters, it is heard clearly). Diegetic sound is also given a faraway and faded tone to show a hallucination.
EDITING
Reverse shots are often used to show communication and action matching is used to keep up with a character. Fade ins to show some sort of dizziness during the scene where Peter Parker was sick due to his spider bite.
Elements of the genre:
Realistic costumes
- Tracking shots
- Natural Lighting
- Realistic Speech
- Jump-cuts
Elements I liked: I enjoyed the accuracy of the costuming and the variety of settings.
Element I disliked: I did not enjoy the dramatic science-fiction aspects, due to their inaccessibility for students like me.
