Short Film Research: Gwafi/Drama

Image
This short film research was a true story that revolved around "loss and reincarnation," after the main character's friend passed away. The main character deals with depression as she tried to move past her traumatic experience trying to save her friend from death. Here are some common camera angles that were used in this film: Close-up: close-up shots focused on specific characters or objects used in the film to show the emotion or expression of a character. This angle is particularly effective in this film because it allows the audience to connect with the character on a deeper level. Medium shot: medium shots capture the upper body and part of the surroundings of the subject in this film. This angle is used to show the body language and facial expressions of the characters, as well as their relationships with other characters. Long shot: long shots in this film capture the entire body of the subject and shows the character in their environment. This angle is used to

Short Film Research: Bus44/ Drama

Image
The short film watched today was "bus 44" which is a film about a bus which gets robbed on the road and turns to a dramatic ending. It takes place in another country, which makes it have another language. I looked thorough all the elements in the film and here is what I found. Common Sound in the film The most common sounds in the genre are the diegetic sound and dialogue. All the sounds in short film originate from the story world. The sounds do help make the film because even with no music you can still feel the emotion and dramatic turn in the story. The lack of sound if anything adds more which makes the film even more drama filled. The sound, while lacking, is still really good.   Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in the film the common CLAMPS in the film are props, costumes, and acting. The acting in the film is dramatic and tear wrenching as you watch the actors go through this situation on the bus. The way the bus driver acts after going through such a traumatic exper

Short Film Research: Last Three Minutes/Drama

Common Sound in your genre      Abrupt sounds were used throughout the film. Melodic sounds were also used. This creates a soft but also engaging contrast to the film. The sounds used in this short film created an airy atmosphere. This gives the audience the impression that the main character is reminiscing but also living through the events.  Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in your genre      The outfits of the characters in their designated scenes fit the settings. In one scene, one can see parents outside. The sun is bright and they are wearing countryside attire. Additionally, all the props fit the scenes except one outlier- the crystal shard.  Common Editing in your genre      The short film slowly transitions to other scenes. This gives the audience a sense of peace. Watching the main character’s memories gently drift by tells the audience that he is at peace. It is only at the end of the short film that the scene cuts suddenly. This represents the end of what one can assume, is

Short Film Research: Emilie Muller/ Drama

Image
The first short film I watched was “Emilie Muller”, a short film made in 1994. It's about a girl who goes in for an interview and the director talks to her about what's in her bag. I was able to watch this using a website called ‘film short’ which showed me the movie.  In the film, there are only diegetic sounds in the film. In the beginning, there is some music that plays but it fades out and is the main focus of the film. It's more shown after one main scene that you can only hear the dialogue between the two characters and any other sounds are from the world where the story is being told. Its shows that with drama films the main focus should be the story and not the music that usually plays in movies.        The makeup accents the face and it's natural so it's not heavy on the face. With the costumes, they are clothes that anyone would wear, and they aren't anything different from clothes people would wear on average for an interview. The props all

Research: How To Make A Short Film

What is your takeaway from the video?     This was a great video to watch right before my group and I start really planning our short film. Out of the many key points that I’ll remember, I think my main takeaway was about planning. In the video, the speaker starts off by explaining why planning is so crucial. Planning ahead of filming is good because it sets a firm foundation for your short film. The speaker says that to write a good short film, you have to write what you can “pull off”. This means that you have to plan and write according to your budget and the resources that are at your disposal. This will alleviate the stress that will come from not being able to carry out the short film properly or as planned. What good information did you gather while watching it?     We received so much good information as well as tips for making our short film. Aside from my takeaway, other good information that we gathered from the video is that we need to establish a tone for our short film.

Comparing Le Jetée vs 12 Monkeys

Image
From a video on YouTube, I learned about "twelve monkeys", and how it apparently is a short film version of "la Jetée".       The name of the video is "is 12 monkeys better than the original" which goes through and explains the differences and how they changed. My own takeaway is that while short films can be derived from movies, they can be changed into its own creation despite having the same plot. It doesn't need to perfectly resemble the original movie; in fact, it can have its own take and be even better than the original. I learned that the movie cannot be reimagined through the help of writing and creative changes and added to the movie.      Short films can be entertaining when written with the right amount of all elements and not just full of jokes. The movie can have the same plot but take different risk, like how twelve monkeys break out of its restraints that la Jetée had. The movie short monkeys became its own thing, and truly was a

Comparing 9, The Short, And 9, The Full-Length Movie

Image
My first impression of this short film was a bit strange. I felt like the post-apocalyptic earth with mechanical creatures and animals made the film a strange sci-fi feel. However, the meaning behind the plot regarding humans and machines, or what makes people alike in certain ways was shown when the other eight rag dolls emerged from the dead. The lack of speech or diction in this film also aided the meaning behind his film in regard to what makes us all alike. It is also cool to learn and relate to a character without even hearing them talk. Conventions used are an abundance of low and high angles, to show the antagonist's power over 9, yet also eye-level shots are used to show emotion in such characters. Full-length film: The full-length film had much more character development, we were able to better understand who the characters were and how the emotional vulnerability aided the plot of the film. In the full film, the ragdoll seems to be more on a mission than an adv

Genre Choice For Film

Image
After a lot of discussion, our group decided to choose the... drama genre! There are many reasons why we decided to pick drama for our short film's genre. Out of the other three potential genres, drama was more convenient. It also went well with our vision for our film. It would be much easier for us to film our short film with dramatics in mind.    The thriller genre would have been a great choice. However, we simply do not have the funds for it. Additionally,  it would have been harder to enact a true quality thriller. Due to our lack of resources, choosing the thriller genre would have been impractical. Maybe one day we will make a thriller!      The fantasy genre would have also been a good choice. Unfortunately, it does not complement our short film's story. It is important that we find a genre that compliments our film's story because we do not want to confuse the audience. Confusing the audience would do us a disservice since our film's story is not really fic

Researching The Thriller Genre For Our Short Film

Image
The next blog my group and I decided to research was thriller. We decided to research this genre because thriller will aid towards that suspense, and provides a more interesting climax that we would like to ad in our film. Common camera angles: A low angle shot is when the camera is positioned below the subject and is pointed upward. This angle can make the subject appear larger and more powerful, and can also create a sense of danger or menace. This type of shot is often used in thrillers to create a sense of fear or anxiety in the audience. A high angle shot is the opposite of a low angle shot, and is when the camera is positioned above the subject and is pointed downward. This angle can make the subject appear smaller and less powerful, and can create a sense of vulnerability or weakness. This type of shot is often used in thrillers to create a sense of suspense or uncertainty. Over-the-shoulder shots are when the camera is positioned behind and slightly above the shoulder of one

Researching The Drama Genre For Our Short Film

Common CAMS in Drama: There are many essential angles in films with a drama genre. One of the best camera shots for drama is a tilt angle, however, there are many others. Tilt angles help create a dramatic effect within a film and can bring out a series of different emotions. Other angles best used in a drama film are wide angle, long shot, medium shot, close-up, and extreme close-up. Common Sound in Drama: Sound is very important in dramatic films. Deep, slow sounds with the use of sad strings or low registers on an instrument can create an emotional monologue. It may also create suspense in the film. Common Mis-En-Scene (CLAMPS) in Drama: The main elements of Mis-En-Scene are: lighting, costuming, hair, and makeup. These are important because depending on what is happening in the drama, the characters may wear contrasting outfits or outfits that may represent how they're feeling. Editing tactics in drama: one of the many editing techniques in drama films is the use of jump cuts w

Genres I Would Like to Research

Image
For our group's film, I would really love to research many genres. This is important because I want to be sure of exactly what style our film will have. Picking the best genre will help the audience connect better with our short film's story. Drama: In films, drama is a category or genre of narrative fiction intended to be more serious than humorous in tone. There are many kinds of drama. The main element in a drama is the occurrence of conflict. This includes emotional and social conflict. Usually, the resolution is in the course of the storyline. Considering that our pitch has a plot twist, this may be a good genre to pick for our short story. Mystery: A film that revolves around the solution to a problem or a crime. Usually, it focuses on the efforts of the detective, private investigator, or amateur to solve the mysterious circumstances. Using clues, making an investigation, and a clever deduction, the mystery is solved. This genre may be a good fit for our short sto
